Patrick Wallace

Looking for retirement projects in 2011, my eye lit on a brief reference to Librivox in a newspaper. Perhaps it stirred distant memories of my primary school’s attempt to engage us all in “choral recitation” (imagine, if you will, 30+ ten-year-olds reciting, supposedly in unison, TS Eliot’s “Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat”), but from my first hesitant attempts, it’s offered a chance to re-engage in some light literary research, to practise my BBC poetry voice and the French and German that there hasn’t been much occasion to use since graduation. Now the invitation to be a “rhapsode” encourages me to look forward to developing a more histrionic side not exactly favoured in my former career as a university administrator and website drone.
